Seniors and Retirees
If
you’re looking for a more relaxed, slower pace of life once
you retire, Alma is for you. And if you’re looking for a full
life, stuffed with plenty of opportunities and activities for your
golden years, Alma is for you, too. In addition to offering some
of the most affordable housing available anywhere, Alma has the
wide streets, big trees, and low traffic, crime and tax rates many
seniors will find appealing.
The Alma Senior Center is a modern, attractive facility
where many seniors meet for noon meals, cards, crafts and good conversation.
A wide range of services is available through the Senior Center,
including
transportation, educational opportunities, social services and recreational
activities. The Senior Center can also help you get chores done
you can’t do on your own, provide legal advice, and help you
with your income taxes.
Healthcare is an issue for many seniors, and that’s
one place Alma shines. The Harlan County Hospital is a 25 bed facility
in Alma with a full range of short-term acute care and outpatient
services. It is currently undergoing a $6 million expansion, with
a large addition and renovation of the existing facility. A licensed
ambulance service with Emergency Medical Technicians is available to provide emergency transportation, and
Good Samaritan Air Care in Kearney provides emergency helicopter
transportation to a trauma center just minutes away from Alma if
needed.
Colonial Villa Good Samaritan Center (http://www.goodsam.com)
is conveniently located just north of downtown and is a 56 bed
intermediate care facility. 24-hour nursing care is available
in a home-like atmosphere with a scenic campus.
Alma also has Hillcrest Terrace Assisted Living which
consists of 12 units with 24-hour staffing, three meals per day,
regularly scheduled transportation, a variety of se nior
services and off-street parking.
A wide variety of outdoor activities – hiking,
bird watching, hunting, fishing, golf and much more – are
practically at your doorstep in Alma.
If you are looking for educational opportunities,
the Central Community College system (http://www.cccneb.edu/)
offers classes in the Alma area, as well as having campuses throughout
the region. The University of Nebraska-Kearney campus is also only
about an hour’s drive from Alma (http://www.unk.edu/).
