Parents and Children
Many
parents are finding that urban centers are not necessarily the best
place to raise children. In many cases, they’re exposed to
crime, gangs, drugs and other urban ills. Because living in cities
can be expensive, parents often have to work longer hours or multiple
jobs and aren’t available to their children as much as they
should be. Additionally, schools in urban centers are sometimes
good, but often have a high student-teacher ratio and a low graduation
rate.
In Alma, our student-teacher ratio is one of the lowest
in Neb raska
at 11:1. Our students score significantly higher than the state
average in reading, writing and math, and our graduation rate is
an enviable 96.25%, with a high percentage of students going on
to pursue higher education.
Because traffic and crime are lower and community
involvement is high, parents don’t worry so much about their
kids being out on their own. Alma is a great place for a kid to
be a kid.
And
just because we’re a smaller town doesn’t mean there
aren’t activities for children and youth. In addition to sports
and arts programs in the schools, opportunities are available in
Scouting, 4-H and FFA, and many of the area churches offer programs
and services aimed at children. Youth sports leagues are also active
in Alma. Facilities such as the library, swimming pool and golf
course also offer activities to keep kids well occupied.
Lastly, families find living in Alma more affordable.
Whether you rent or buy, you’ll find housing costs to be a
fraction of what they are in big cities.
